3D pack for Christmas right ? (ca. 10 000$) :) --> nice ! ;)

1. Now, first things first: choose one, not all 3 cos there totally different in Layout, methods used, etc...
2. I'd suggest C4D which is easier then the other two (but there are more tutorials about 3DSMax), while Maya is FAR more difficult, mathematical and there are almost no tutorials.
3. Google and try to find beginners things, like moving around screen, camera's different primitives etc...
4. better yet, like me try to find some books, in the beginning it's always much easier to learn the beginnings with some book next to you, and you'll need the right terminology to comprehent the tuts online so... books are inevitable in the beginning --> "Bible"-series are very good for starters.

Try simply searching the database with the keyword abstract, the choose a 3D program you have. C4D would be your best bet for the 3D program to search that under.

I have made some pretty cool abstracts with Bryce. I would use the programs that make it easy to setup fake metals and other materials, because realistic reflections are complicated and take time to render.

What I did is create a series of toruses (is the plural tori?). Anyhow I randomly scaled them, moved them around and then moves the camera in really close. Then you set the camera focal to really wide (6mm or someting) and this will start some real good distortions.

Anyhow, play around with simple shapes at extreme camera angles and you will see some cool stuff happen.
