The Darwin Awards foundation (website) are saluteing the "survival of the fittiest" theory postulated by Charles Darwin simply by awarding the stupidest self induced deaths of the year.

Ranking number 2 this year. Labeled: "High on life"

Quote

Take a deep breath...

(3 June 2006, Florida) Two more candidates have thrown themselves into the running for a Darwin Award. The feet of Jason and Sara, both 21, were found protruding from a deflated, huge helium advertising balloon. Jason was a college student, and Sara attended community college, but apparently their education had glossed over the importance of oxygen.

The pair pulled down the 8' balloon, and climbed inside. Their last words consisted of high-pitched, incoherent giggling as they slowly passed out and passed into the hereafter.

Sheriff's deputies said the two were not victims of foul play. No drugs or alcohol were found. The medical examiner reported that helium inhalation was a significant factor in their deaths. A family member said "Sara was mischievous, to be honest. She liked fun and it cost her."
And on first place! Labeled "The Hammer of doom"

Quote

(August 2006, Brazil) August brings us a winner from Brazil, who tried to disassemble a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) by driving back and forth over it with a car. This technique was ineffective, so he escalated to pounding the RPG with a sledgehammer. The second try worked--in a sense. The explosion proved fatal to one man, six cars, and the repair shop wherein the efforts took place.

14 more RPG grenades were found in a car parked nearby. Police believe the ammunition was being scavenged to sell as scrap metal. If it wasn't scrap then, it certainly is now!

Whats the take on this? Bizzare, thoughtfull or just humor?

humourous indeed! ive seen some pretty funny ones before too.

however quite un-PC (itll have the tree huggers all over it :)) , as i cant imagine many people find death a laughing matter no matter how strange a death it was.

Lol the Darwin Awards have some of the most bizarre situations when it comes to this type of stuff!! It's interesting, but not something I'd like to try and do, myself.

It is funny, but only to an extent. These were real people that actually died. I don't think death is exactly funny.

One of them, can't remember which year etc but it went something like a man tied his foot to a roll of wire and tried to bungee jump off a bridge. Of course it didn't bounce and he soon found himself floating down the river with only one foot ...The ironic part is the shock from hitting the cold water actually stunted the bleeding and he only died later of the minor injuries sustained from floating down the river and hitting a few 'obstacles'.

As fro it being funny, of course it is....big deal these people are dead fine it's a tragedy in some cases but you have to make a joke of some things in life...personally i have always taken death very lightly.
