What you should have done was reported the phone stolen with the police department ASAP - most phone companies wont bill you for calls made after it was reported stolen with either them or the police (basically it acts as proof that the calls were not made by you).
Good luck getting out of paying for the calls, not sure you're going to be able though I'm afraid!

Agreed.
I find it hard to believe that Nextel do not have a free 24/7 number to report and bar stolen phones...I know all UK networks do. (many of which are also in the US - Vodafone, t-mobile etc)
