US woman dies after water contest
A Californian woman who took part in a water-drinking contest to win a video game system has died of water intoxication, tests have shown.

Jennifer Strange had taken part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" game run by KDND 107.9 radio in Sacramento, which promised the winner a Nintendo Wii.

A work colleague said Ms Strange had reported her head was hurting hours after the contest and was going home.

Ms Strange, 28, was found dead on Friday at her house in Rancho Cordova.

Health warning

Local assistant coroner Ed Smith said initial tests showed death was "consistent with water intoxication".

Contestants were first given eight ounce (225 millilitre) bottles to drink every 15 minutes.

Contestant James Ybarra told Associated Press news agency: "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Mr Ybarra said he quit after five bottles but remaining contestants started on larger bottles.

"She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids," Mr Ybarra said.

One of Ms Strange's work colleagues, Laura Rios, said: "She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad.

"She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

The station said its staff were stunned at the death.

Yes, Large amounts of water can kill. You. But I mean LARGE amounts. Also, water during long road trips, that's a good idea. Since you keep becoming dehydrated in the summer heat, you need water. But when it's winter and you're not letting the water out, it'll kill you.

Saw this on the news last night, hope the radio station is sued for being so stupid everyone knows water can kill whether it be summer or winter our bodies cannot cope with vast quantities that quickly.

It's ironic that her last name is "Strange".

 I was just about to say that - It's kind of shocking though, but very very sad at the same time. Imagine what her family is going through, and having to tell their children that their mum died by drinking too much water...

especially since it isn't the first case, not with the radio station but the same thing happened here in Dallas, TX. Some sort of fraternity party. Two pledges, I think, died from water intoxication.

I don't recall the final outcome.

Water intoxication is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by a very rapid intake of water

It's quite common you just don't hear of it much, only reason this made the news is because of a radio contest.

dead to try and win a $297 Wii don't make sense why suck a ridiculous contest.

I try to drink a gallon a day during the summer :-) I'm not dead yet. This sounds like a Darwin Awards 2007 entry to me, sadly.

It's not even minutely funny though... and I don't think their family would approve of it being a Darwin Award.

Does anyone know if they told the contestants of what side-affects might occur if they participated?

They didn't... that's why I agree with Donna that the family should sue the Radio Station...

considering the amount of time you would have to take off to even partake in the contest i dont see why she didnt just go to best buy or something >.>
if it was every 15 minutes and she stayed for more than 5 bottles, she was there for at least an hour and a half... not to mention the time to get there and everything else factored in she should have just bought one
but still the radio station being stunned at her death seems to imply that they had no idea what could happen, so obviously they never told the contestants the risks

They probably have in small print somewhere that they take no responsibility for any injuries etc. that occur on-site.
