This is my newly created portfolio, I just got it up today, the content isn't totally finished yet, but I would like your feedback on the site and effects.

Some things you need to know first.

javascript needs to be enabled
It does have a preloader, please take the time to wait for this to complete because it will greatly increase the experience of dot-Silver.co.uk since some of the javascript effects happens on the "body onload" bit and it targets the images, so it can't do it to the images until they load. And the 0% isn't a counter, it's to show that it's the start of the bar.

I wanted to go for a web2.0 style portfolio, so gradient fills, line patterns, and AJAX effects, I think it suits it well, but I would like your feedback.

Go to dot-Silver.co.uk

Any affiliate swaps would be nice :angrylooking:

Its weird...I'm a flash developer, so you could say I'm rather used to seeing preloaders, but it bugged me to see one that wasnt on a flash website :angrylooking:

I like the site, but Im not sure if its the fact that Im using firefox or what, but some of the coding seems to be bugged. Preloader didnt show a %, and it seemed to keep loading even after the bar was full (might have just been my internet, or loading other content that wasnt included in the preloader). The image transition effects seemed to be a bit bugged at the end of the transition. When you first click a link, the image expanded and appeared, but it had a white line at the top that animated a bit then dissapeared and shifted the image up 5 or so pixels. Same type of thing happened when it animated out. It ended off with a large white line, or block, then it jumped up. Other than that, pretty good. Nice clean and simple.

I think it's nice, it's a bit strange the way you are showing your work, with all that javascript making the images appear and disapear...

In my opinion you didn't need that

Well I used it so that the page wouldn't be so long, I think that shorter pages are better, which why pagination of news and long lists are great.

And as for the %, on the bar there is a 0% on the left of it. You should see it because it's done in text. As for the bar keep on loading, I'm not sure why that's happened, you're the first one :S

Also, for the white gap, that's because when you click a small preview, it folds closed, so you get a small bit at the top folding the image, then it moves up a bit after the image is gone, and as for the other gap when you click the larger preview, the gap is there because the image again, is folding away which means the image has to completely go before the images below can move up into that empty space.

I was thinking of making them just do a slide up and slide down instead of folding, it would make it look more neat.

Yup. Would probably make it look much much better. You might want to consider changing your loader too...it looks semi-lame with the font you chose. Flash works with loaders because you can transition from loader to content smoothly, and people are used to seeing loaders in flash. For HTML tho...people dont like to wait, dont like to see things load, and its harder to make a clean transition from load to content. Do somthing about that 0% deal showing up, too.

well I don't know how to use flash, if I did, or if someone could teach me cuz a lot of the tutorials i've seen for making a site in flash are pretty lame IMO.

Well you can always skip the preloader, broadband users should be OK with it, but for slower connections it's best to wait.

If you compressed your images there would be no need for a pre-loader even for dialup users, those images should be no more than 40kb's each. I found it very slow in loading and I'm on a very fast connection.

Nice site, the picture Ajax is very well done. I'm not a big fan of preloaders and like Donna said it would go faster if they were compressed. Nice Site.

I'll see what I can do donna, I used the Save For Web in Photoshop.

And also the site has been updated again, I took the preloader away.

Ok I would like to get your opinions on the loading time now for my portfolio. I've taken into account what Donna said, and I've re-saved the larger previews with smaller quality to make them around 40kb. For me it loaded pretty fast... about 15 seconds and I'm on dial-up.

Thanks.
