Recently my processor overheated and burned out. I replaced it with an older version. I had a 2.8ghz with HT and I now have a 1.8 with no HT.

I know I obviously down graded, but it seems my machine runs incredibly slow. Sometimes when I am typing, my computer takes a second to catch up.

Would swapping a processor out effect performance at all? I seems like a 1.8ghz processor should allow me to run Photoshop and Firefox at the same time.

Obviously swapping out your processor would affect your performance... it's the heart of a computer. I used to have a 1.6ghz w/ HT, now i have a 2.8ghz dual core. Things don't "run" faster, but they load faster and run a bit smooother. Back with my 1.6, i could occasionlly type faster than the computer, but that was only when i had a massive amount of things going on at once.

I would say 1 of 2 things is happening right now.
1. HT is as good as they say, and it is making the difference.
2. The burn out affected more than just the processor.

Sorry i can't offer any real help, but hopefully this will point you in some good direction.

I am looking at the computer right now (I'm not my laptop) and I see little circular "skyscrapers" on the motherboard are kind of popping open and orange stuff is coming out. Would these be causing problems?

I'm not sure what they are called, but in this picture of a random motherboard they are the black and blue cylidners right behind the serial ports.

If those blew up and orange stuff is coming out, i would assume that is a severe problem and you need to either get a new motherboard or get it professionally repaired. If i'm right, those breaking could have actually caused your processor to overheat.

Unfortunately, i'm not an EE major, so this is a bit out of my hands.

If you cooked your cpu then there is a VERY good chance that you have also cooked the seating for the CPU socket as well. This would cause bad conduction which would effect performance. My recommendation would be to get a new motherboard as any over heading is not good for it and could effect it's performance.

One of my systems here is a 1.8 no HT and that can run both PS and Max at the same time without any major hassles.
