Lightwave 3d i heard is popular among freelancers due to its relativly low price yet beeing a powerfull application if used the right way. But i dont know about the app for real as i havnt tried it. Someone correct me if im wrong. There is also blender 3d whitch is a free 3d application that can be downloaded at http://www.blender.org/ if you want to try out 3d modelling.

For just basic 3d, Google Sketchup is free,
For fully advanced 3d, Blender is the best.

Maya

Did you forget the price part? :) Maya certainly cover the "Best 3D" program, but at a steep learning curve and even harder to swallow on the price.

I think this is a very hard question to answer its like asking for the best car for a good price. If you narrowed it to the best car under $10k it would be easier to answer. I like Blender, but for enviroments, etc. I've messed with Bryce and been pretty happy. I got it for like $6 on one of their deals.

Nobody mentioned C4D???
(not sure about prizing)

Good luck, you can always start with trials to see what suits you best!?

Maya

Well I have heard of Maya lite which is supposed to be a cheaper version of Maya (well Duh! ;)) for is more advisable to students to purchace then the full blown out version, but im not sure if it cuts out some of the stuff tho (more then likely will as it will cost less :o)

Happy Hunting

P.S yeah C4D is a good one, easy to use, just a matter of knowing what does what and how to order things in the object manager (works on some hiarachy scheme)

Tbh. It will mostly be the artist and not the program that does the job.

Now this is really really a matter of artistry --> you only have to look around on the internet to see that pretty amazing stuff is done in every program.

Most important thing here is to stick with 1 program and a lot of patience in the beginning: doing 300 tutorials (twice) and learning something new every time. Then buying 300 books and start over again.
Then when you think you know the program a little, you think oàf stuff to create (start with things close to you) and every problem you encounter ask in the right forum....

Then start thinking a little bigger, but dont just promise any friends very big projects just yet ;) !

any particular reason why there is no doubt that maya is the best 3d program?

i think narull got it right:

Yeah to be really honest any program can almost do the same thing only if you realy know what your doing.... I never tried blender but it would be a very good start becaus it looks like it has all the components that the other top notch ones have but withou the price... but yeah if you want some quality programs go for like Maya, 3Ds max, lightwave 3D, C4D and I can keep going... and also if you are a student well best thing to do is go on a student discount site... you can pretty much get incredible discounts on so many programs... I bought my maya 8 unlimited for only 400$ and I got like 2 other programs shipped with it that cost over like 1000$... thats not counting maya 8... thats like another 1000$...
