Then open up any application and then go to the menu Edit>Paste.
You then have your image, just save it as you wish.

command + shift + 3 = full screen capture.
command + shift + 4 = selective screen capture. Gives a cross hair where you can click and drag over the area you want to capture.

Hate to drag up an older thread, but I felt like it could be kept in this thread as well.If you are on a Mac (for those who want to know). You can do screen caps in 2 ways.
command + shift + 3 = full screen capture.
command + shift + 4 = selective screen capture. Gives a cross hair where you can click and drag over the area you want to capture.
If you throw in the Control key in the shortcut, it takes the screenshot to the clipboard, instead of making a new file on the desktop.
