Hey there everyone, it's me again.

Yet again I would like to ask another question regarding forums. I am currently in the process of thinking of a particular idea which will be put into place soon, however I wanted to clear something up to see whether it is possible, hard to do or costly.

What I want to ask is; if I create a forum using a free host, would I be able to transfer the whole forum 100% from that host to my host when I get it?

That is the main question, however I want to ask for your opinion now. Should I first create the forum using a free host, or wait an unknown period of time till I get my own host?

Thanks everyone and I hope to hear from you all soon. The sooner I get replies the sooner I will be happier and ready to unleash my idea!

Thanks again! :)

Note: If you want to know what the idea is and what I have planned then please let me know. You may be interested enough to join me or help me out. :(

Is this idea of yours just going to be another forum ? The usual community hangout with tutorials and such or a nice custom one?

If you go with a free host forum, make sure you check with the 'Features' to see if it will let you move the database at any given time. If they let you backup the database, that would be the same thing because you can then restore it on the new paid host.

If you plan on getting the paid hosting soon, then I would say get all your stuff together and wait. If you don't know when you are going to get the paid hosting, and you think it is going to be a long time. Then I would suggest getting a free host. Forumer has both free phpBB, and IPB hosting. I used them in the past, but I'm not sure how their their transfers go.

If all you are doing is setting up on a freehost for testing reasons, then it would be better to install WAMP on your computer and run a local server. That way you have complete control with your forum while you test, and can easily transfer all data to your live, paid site when you are ready.

Moving forums.. done it many times and I think I have had all the problems with this one can have, so I will give you some things to watch out for.

1. Make sure you can get an sql file of your complete database.
2. Make sure you have ftp access (not browser upload as many free hosters give), but ftp access so you can download the templates.

This to do first.

Before you back up the database for moving (do this ONLY when you are going to move the forum and not before).
Go into the acp and change all the settings to reflect your new hosting.. url, folder locations and such like.
Some of these settings may have to be done in the database using something like phpmyadmin or such like.

Once you have done all the settings and things. Export the database and download any templates you want to take with you.

Now when you get to your new hoster install a fresh copy of the forum package you are using. (you can kill the database after the next few steps).

Now import your database from your old forum and make sure you get no errors. Many times phpmyadmin will toss a wobbly if the database is large and the you have no option other than to do it by hand using the sql option or by braking down the sql file into several small ones.. pain in the butt, yeah I know. There are commercial programs that can import a database, but I find these very slow and boring.

Now the next thing is to go to your newly install forum and import the templates you want.
Now go into the config file and change the database settings to your old forum one you just created.
If all test out ok you can delete the database that was created by the package install as you won't need that anymore. To be on the safe side I normally just rename it just in case. Nothing worse than deleting it and you then find parts were still used, but that should not be the case if the config file has been changed.

So good luck.. I hate moving forums LOL.

The idea is going to be another forum. It is going to be a nice custom one, meaning it's not about tutorials or anything of the such. It is practically something that I need a forum for which will ensure that the services I offer are direct and organised. Basically, without a forum, then my idea cannot go ahead.

@LkuHomer: That's something I will be guaranteed to do, read the features list and all of the terms of service. I don't want to start somewhere and then find out down the track that I cannot do what I intended on doing. That's something that many people stuff up on, then they find that they need to abandon their work and start from scratch. I will keep it in mind when doing this LkuHomer, thanks for letting me know.

@Pax: What I have in mind to do has got nothing to do with any testing. I want to start up a forum and want to know if it can be transferred to my own host when I have it up and running.

@Creative Insanity: That is a great help and I will note it all down! Thanks a lot for letting me know about all of this and how to go about doing it, I am glad to know that you have experienced it already many times.
If I need any help during the process I'll be sure to contact you. Thanks again Creative Insanity.

More replies are greatly appreciated guys and girls. I will take everything you say, as well as opinions and critique, into account when going about achieving my plans. Thanks everyone!
