I've had my computer for a couple of years now, but a bit more than a year ago, my DVD+CD drive started messing up. First of all, it would not show any files in any CD's I put in. It will read the CD, the little CD loading cursor showed, but once that disappeared nothing happened, and it would show no files on the CD. Then, my burner stopped working. Whenever I put in a DVD-R/RW, it would think it was a CD in some programs (aswell as Explorer), and in others (like WMP) it would say there is no CD/DVD in the drive. It still reads DVD's, but who knows when that's going to go? I have found no problem with the hardware itself, and I have spoken to some people who have suggested updating my firmware, but I have no idea what that is or where to get it. I should also mention my brothers computer was bought at the same time as mine, with exactly the same everything, and his drive still reads and burns. I don't think it is a virus, since I've scanned my computer countless times, and found nothing. It's really annyoing me since now is when I need it most. I've had to burn and read CD's and DVD's from other computers around my house, but it has become so inconvenient.
Thanks in advanced,
Ben.

Firmware is the in-built software in your hardware... it's the software that tells your hardware what it's doing in the first place. Usually you can find firmware upgrades on the manufacturers site... sorry, I'm not too much of a help for this. Maybe it's just the wear and tear from all the times you've needed it?
Hope the best comes from this!!
I don't think they cost too much anymore now days... I think they're under $50AU. So maybe you could go for a new one?

Maybe... I'm formatting my computer today, so I'll see if that fixes it. If not, I'll probably have to go buy a new one

Hardware fails, it's a fact. I know one of my disc drives is going to the great microchip in the sky soon. Try updating the firmware, then the drivers, and if all else fails get another.
