I can't decide, should I go with BBpress for my forums or SMF. For a while now I have used punbb and lately I feel I have got my forums into a rut because punbb does their database set up so weird it is hard to integrate it with the site. I so have decided to switch forums but what to use? BBpress or smf. SMF has more features but bbpress is nice and simple...

I strongly disagree, I used phpbb for a few years now and all you get are spam and fake accounts being created.

Anyway I am really leaning towards smf because I have been playing with features and I am really starting to like it.

On phpBB, I agree. I wouldn't advise it's use to anyone.

And as to your question, IMHO - I'd go with SMF. I used to be a big fan of phpBB, and a hater of SMF - but over the last few months I've grown to like SMF. Loaded with features, nice admin panel, and secure.

If you're looking for something simple, there are scripts that are far better than BBPress. Such as http://www.phorum.org/

Have you guys used phpbb in the last 6 months? Marked improvements on security and also with the release of v3 I think phpbb is going to be even better. I have also used phpbb for a number of years, and I have never had a problem with it. I only used it until I could afford VBB as I like that way better than any. But for a free one I would not look past phpbb.. I don't like smf as it is really only a rework of yabb and that was horrid.

I have. And, no matter how much work is done to phpBB2.x, it will never be far enough along in security, as other free forum software. It is plagued by vulnerabilities, and new ones are found daily. v3 does seem to be a huge step forward for them, in features, security, etc.. but, I'm sure they'll have the same problems with it, as they had with v2.

SMF, MyBB, punBB, are far better than phpBB will ever be - atleast for now.

I really think it is like windows.. because the more use it the more it is going to be targeted by these low lifes. Goes without saying really.

I HAVE used phpbb for many years back with some older sites I have ran and the begging of the Raive Studios and it was full of spam accounts. Also other forums I was apart of switched from it just recently because of that.

Any how I have decided to go with smf, I am now working with the SSI to get a login to work on my sites main pages.
