I strongly disagree, I used phpbb for a few years now and all you get are spam and fake accounts being created.I say none.. phpbb is the best free one I reckon.
Anyway I am really leaning towards smf because I have been playing with features and I am really starting to like it.

On phpBB, I agree. I wouldn't advise it's use to anyone.I strongly disagree, I used phpbb for a few years now and all you get are spam and fake accounts being created.I say none.. phpbb is the best free one I reckon.

And as to your question, IMHO - I'd go with SMF. I used to be a big fan of phpBB, and a hater of SMF - but over the last few months I've grown to like SMF. Loaded with features, nice admin panel, and secure.
If you're looking for something simple, there are scripts that are far better than BBPress. Such as http://www.phorum.org/

I HAVE used phpbb for many years back with some older sites I have ran and the begging of the Raive Studios and it was full of spam accounts. Also other forums I was apart of switched from it just recently because of that.Have you guys used phpbb in the last 6 months? Marked improvements on security and also with the release of v3 I think phpbb is going to be even better. I have also used phpbb for a number of years, and I have never had a problem with it. I only used it until I could afford VBB as I like that way better than any. But for a free one I would not look past phpbb.. I don't like smf as it is really only a rework of yabb and that was horrid.
Any how I have decided to go with smf, I am now working with the SSI to get a login to work on my sites main pages.
