So what happens say for example you take your laptop into town and turn it on to find you have 5 available networks to connect to (none of them are yours), would you?

What would you do?

I would connect to one if it didnt require a network password thingy.
Why the hell not?

My brother does that when I restrict his access if he is being annoying :P

We live in a big road so there is bound to be open connections somewhere

I live in a townhouse so, I have neighbors all over the place. If my internet goes down for whatever reason, I'll hop onto their network. There have been many times in my travels where I have just signed on to some random internet connection to check my email or something. I was driving down the highway (in the middle of nowhere) and managed to pick up a signal. I have no idea from what...my only thought that maybe one of the big transport trucks I was near had some satellite internet connection and had a wireless router set up?

Just an FYI that piggybacking someone's unprotected wireless connection is illegal in case you weren't sure :angrylooking:

Right on the nail Faken. I don't use wireless.. but if I did I sure as hell would use a WEP key and sure as hell would protect it. If I did have wireless in my laptop and found a insecure connection I would track the owner of the network and give him/her a quote to secure it.

I don't ever move about with laptops/anything wireless really so i can't say I've been in this situation, however yeah i probably would, regardless of it being illegal or not.

I have wireless here, but i haven't put a WEP on it as i am too lazy tbh, I know everyone who lives within the wireless radius here and we get minimal traffic (countryside) so it's not worth the effort to me heh.

I know it's illegal lol but my laptop auto connects to whatevers available on startup, that's not my fault. I told one Hotel though, everyone here is quite dopey when it comes to PC's and securing networks.

Mine does too. I've had to disable all the ones that I pickup around my house to make sure it doesn't go nuts trying to connect to all these random networks when I boot up.

yeah but a lot of PC illiterate ppl just plug in the router and go... they don't even change the default admin login.

Now, I found that if I took the wep off my router, and just had a MAC address validation that things ran quicker. How secure is using the MAC address? I figure if someone can go to the trouble of changing a MAC address on their hardware just to get into my home network, then they'd probably be able to spend the time it took to crack the wep as well...

But I might be wrong, anyone know?

I don't think changing a MAC address on hardware would give any type of security. After all it is not the wireless router you are effecting, just local hardware.

No, my router is setup to filter MAC addresses. If the MAC address of the computer that is trying to connect isnt one on the allowed MAC list, then it cant connect.

MAC addresses are also used wirelessly, its not only local. And i don't think anybody would waste its time changing the MAC address of the hardware (you would need to know what it is first anyway).
