Viacom who own MTV and Nickelodeon (Full list at bottom of this topic) are going to sue Google and YouTube for using, which they believe to be, over 160,000 unauthorised clips of its TV programmes and shows and have been viewed 1.5 Billion times!

More news here : Clickity Clank

To put it into perspective, viacom are the owners of these channels:

Comedy Central
MTV2
MTVU
Spike TV
VH1
IFILM

And a few more.

Also, they own Harmonix which I believe have something to do with Guitar Hero for PS2 and Xbox.

So if you think about the videos you have sen on YouTube such as, I don't know, South Park which has been ripped from TV off the Comedy Central channel or MTV, you have watched something that was free for you but Viacom earn money through TV watchers.

I can see where Viacom are coming from on this, I have seen many Comedy Central and MTV Video clips on YouTube, and 1.5 Billion Views, thats a lot of free viewing!

Viacom could have earned more if those 1.5 Billion views were TV Based and not viewed online.

Google also say that they are "confident" that YouTube has respected the legal rights of copyright holders.

We'll see how that folds out in court :angrylooking:

This has been talked about before on youtube with the vid : The Machine is Us/ing Us: Web 2.0
We have to redefine copyright . Its not stealing something , its sharing it. Im sure google will win.
Nothing can stop google ... :google:

1 billon dollars? For google thts small potatoes, even if they lost nothing would change. In any case this is gonna be a interesting heavy weight match.

I bet in the end google is gonna pay viacome 100 milion or something and promise to keep a better eye on the vids... Or promise viacom a share off the add incomes that their videos is goin to give in the future.

I thought it was about all of Google not just YouTube meh I think that maybe YouTube should watch the content a little more closely. You can't rule the world if your getting sued everyday lol.

A side question why does google have youtube and googlevideo....

Watch, Viacom and Google will work out some deal and offer some exclusive thing if they remove all the copyrighted stuff that Viacom owns off of YouTube.

Technically, Google can't monitor the stuff 24/7/365. That would take way too much time. They can't have people watching to see who posts copyrighted TV shows.

I think they'll find a middle ground somewhere. YouTube won't be shut down quite yet.

$1,000,000,000 isn't going to shut ANYTHING google related down.

Double the profits?

----------

I read about this in the news paper, i think google will win because they wouldnt be this settled about it, if they were breaking copyright laws they would have made a move and prevented this law suit.
Simple as that.

It's the owner's responsibility to make sure user's are using it for the appropriate manner. Yes, some is to blame for the YouTubers, but think, if a scammer is using a bank as a hiding place or something like that, the reputation will go down bad for the bank.

If you own a website and someone posts images of adult content, and someone doesn't like it, it's simply the sites rep that goes down not the users.

Obviously someone doesn't understand what 'Web 2.0' means in the online, internet community. I believe Google and YouTube will win, for sure. Because Google has more man power, and people's knowledge is more greater of Google and YouTube. How often do you hear about the company, Viacom? Not that often. Not as often as Google and Youtube, anyways. :( :)

No one will win, it will be settled out of court. The whole lawsuit's a fiasco anyway...
