clip in illustrator

okay, now i need to clip in illustrator, i am making a business card and i have a graphic i made in illustrator and it hangs over the sides, i want the image clipped so the overhang is cut off. i have read the help and tried it but i just cant get it to work.

Create a figure (in your case i guess this would be a simple rectangle);
put it on top of the object you want clipped;
then select both and choose "Mask" from the object menu.

beautiful. when i had done it i dont think i tried it with the rectangle(business card) in front of the object.
