I reckon around 600-700 Px for the width is about the right size.

I often use 800 px. But if you look on this site, P2L, they use 1000px, I think.

760 is a nice size to use, anything too much wider gets that horrid horizontal scroll bar, since the vertical scroll bar and its margins take up about 20 pixels and its nice to leave a little room, unless your template is adaptive.
Mine's supposed to shrink to lower resolutions, but my affiliates at the bottom stretch it out so that there's scrolling, not much I can do.

Personally I have my site set at 955 px wide. It works great on any desktop set for 1024x768. But I personally think any website should be designed around 1024x768. I think thats a pretty standard size myself. Anything bigger and lots of people dont use larger sizes. I personally use 1280x1024 for my desktop. Well I hope that is some useful information.

Yeah... of course there's the fact that 800x600 is still the standard resolution. I design all my websites either to expand to the resolution or at 770. 770 cuts it close at the 800x600 resolution, but it's perfect.

Try and make your design work within 770 pixels width. Even through the majority has 1024x768 room, many browsers have an optional left-side navigation window which reduces the Web page display pane into 800 pixels width. Staying at 770 pixels gives the right edge plenty of room for the browser window's scrollbars.

Why doesn't everyone switch to 1024 x 1028 >
I'm on 1280 x 1024, but i have to admit - when making websites i make them 760 wide... which, i have to admit is pretty annoying knowing im losing out on like.... 500 pixels of width for a layout.
I know theres nothing i can do about it, unless i buy everyone bigger monitors... but i guess auto expanding ones a good, if you know what your doing... cos people mess them up allot of the time
--------
Well, that was a break from my usual jitter, that post made sense and was DEeeddlyy serious
**Hopes no 800 x 600 guy's and gall's feelings were hurt in the making of this video**
