Hi :P

Basically I'm looking for a new laptop (From UK retailers only), nothing special, but it has to be reasonably powerful. (i.e. enough to handle photoshop, reading/writing dvds etc as I am currently and will be doing Multimedia for 6th form.)

Just some rough specs to go by:

Dual core
>= 1gb ram
>= 15.4 Screen
>= 1280x800 Resolution (Greater preferred)
>= 128mb Graphics (preferably not intel and ever better if it's not shared)

Don't go to any trouble looking, obviously i can do that myself (and have), however just looking for any recommendations from anyone who has recently purchased a laptop. The only brand i will not even look at is Packard Bell :)

An example what I'm looking at right now..

That's fine, but it's a bit ugly lol.

I'd personally avoid PC World like the plague, perhaps thats just because I dont like them, they are expensive and they dont know what they are talking about :P

I like dell computers to be honest (I am actually going to explain this :)), my current laptop is the best part of 4-5 years old and is a 2.4 single core with its ram boosted to 1gb and a rubbish onboard graphics card but it still copes fine with photoshop and video editing, saving and burning.

I'd take a look at Dells shop though as its cheaper because its online, they always have good offeres on and you can customise the hell out of it so you get exactly what you want :D

Go Mac. Buy via Apple or use Best Buy to find a deal.

The MacBook pro has the specs + more but you can customize your brains out if you wish. It runs all three major platforms--OS X, Windows, Linux--and it has been ranked by Consumer Reports as the best computer for the money.

I had been planning to buy a mac for a long while. I like them, they do everything i need and I am quite able to ignore the rubbish said about them. However, I am not going to buy one now...simply because i don't want to lol. I have no reason for it, I just fancy another Windows machine.

I have looked at dell before, but i have always found i can get better for less money elsewhere. Although i know Dell are..."durable" lol :P

go to www.tomshardware.com and see first the specs you need compared, then go look for the "compare prices"

I bought my dell laptop nearly 2 years ago, and its been great. I got the "Do whatever damage to your laptop you want, just dont get it stolen or set on fire" 3 year warranty for 250 bucks which has been handy.

My computer basically has all the specs you want, minus the dual core (didnt have them when I bought).

1gb of ram
15.4" screen
1920x1200 resulotuion
128mb ATI X300 Mobility graphics card

Cost me 2500 with tax and warranty at the time, so it's probably a bunch cheaper, although, you might have a hard time finding a new 15.4" laptop with 1920x1200 resolution. Its been a while since I've seen one advertised with it, I may be wrong tho.

If you're going to be carting your laptop around (like it was meant to be, not using it as a desktop replacement/infront of the tv computer) I'd go with Dell simply for the warranty. They will fix/replace anything that breaks, for any reason. No questions asked. All they want is for you to send the broken part back to them.

Actually by a slightly strange coincidence i have really narrowed it down between HP, Dell and Sony (sony have some very nice laptops).

Pax, something like is around £700/800 on the Dell website right now, the resolution is still available but it's pricey.

I like Dell but they're just so damn ugly...HP laptops are nice however my last two experiences (actually one was my sisters) with HP weren't exactly great (although that wont stop me that much) and sony look so nice they're prices are stupid...

I'm just window shopping right now anyway, wont buy anything for a month or two.

I have an Alienware laptop and it's been a great investment. Their customer service is great too. Some think they are more for gaming and can be pricy but you definitely get what you pay for. Top quality laptop.
