Hello!
I am starting up my own shop called vintage CD's. I have thousands of videos, CD's and Retro Games which I am willing to sell so I decided to make a website selling them. I have not yet got a web host but here is a preview of the design. Please let me know what you think. I also might need a coder to code the buying process bit.

Sry, but I really think that this looks bad. Maybe you ask someone to make the website. There are a lot people out there doing it for free or a low price.

Or what you could do is search http://www.colourlovers.com for a good colour scheme and use it for your website, because I think the colours really don't look good together.

I would be interested in designing and coding a site for you. If you are interested please PM me and we can negotiate a price.

As for the design you've got...
The colors don't go well together, they clash very strongly. The blue, for example, stands out too much, and draws from the rest of the layout. Also, your design is only color, therefore boring, and won't catch people's attention and make them want to stay at your site. Another thing is that it is set to the left; layouts are more aesthetically pleasing if they are centered.

There's my $0.02 :(

It's more interesting making a website though lol. It would be more fun aswell. Also, all I need is someone who can code HTML and make me the "Buy now" Page. I know I am rubbish at designing websites but I really want to learn how to get good so I could make a kick ass website some day. Oh and by the way, which colours clash with red?

Cheers,

Lol!

No I don't use paint, I use fireworks. Then export to dreamweaver, then put on host. (If I have one) I have centered the page though but that screenshot was taken before I did that.

Please don't take any offence from this, but you don't even need to use fireworks for the design you have created. All you need to do is create the layout (table or CSS, whichever you feel comfortable using) and then add the colour. There is no reason why you should be using images for that design.

Guys, how bout we give him some constructive criticism?

You say "I have thousands of videos, CD's and Retro Games which I am willing to sell so I decided to make a website selling them." Now, that's not a bad idea, but you've got to think; you need to be able to also create a website that is appealing to your target audience - THEY NEED TO WANT TO STAY THERE AND BUY SOMETHING. At the moment, I took one look at your current design and went 'Nuh, sorry - I think I'll press the close button on this website'. Sure, you may have an awesome cart system etc., but unless you have some half-decent design, I'm not sure whether you're going to get as many customers as you want.

Please don't take this as being harsh to you - I'm just trying to help in the way that I know best so that you can get where you'd like to go.

So, the answer to this - maybe you could start by looking up some web designing tips and tutorials for Fireworks

http://www.pixel2life.com/tutorials/adobe_...ebsite_layouts/ has a few tuts for Fireworks Web Design, and one of my favourite ones there would have to be http://www.pixel2life.com/publish/tutorial...t_in_fireworks/

Maybe that can get you started off? If you can, try and find a friend that might have a copy of Adobe Photoshop and look up some web design tutorials for that.

Alternatively, you might be able to find someone who is willing to design a nice looking site for little to no price (if you're short for money) around here at P2L.

But the ultimate thing here is, make sure you look at your website from a customer's point of view and think to yourself 'would this be a site worth visiting/staying at?'.

Wish you luck for your coming days with this website :)

I have found this video tutorial website which I am looking at now.
I might have Photoshop but I havn't looked yet.

Thanks for the help

There are a lot of template sites available on the internet so you could use one of those or DL one and have a look to see how its made. Also when thinking of the backend you could use Joomla, its a free website framework and I believe that has free plugins for shops etc.

When I first started creating a website nearly a year ago for my school coursework I used the web layout tutorials on this website. Although the designs of the layouts were not my own I was able to get ideas from them for my own design. After many many tries I finally got a design I was happy with, even if right now I don't feel it is a good look.

Basically what I'm saying is, and I know someone else has said roughly the same on here is to use the web layout tutorials on the main website (Fireworks > web layouts) and get some inspiration from them, also google websites which specialise in what your website is about and take aspects you like from those websites and integrate them into yours.

Don't do what I did and give up after a couple of designs because you feel you don't have the 'touch'. Your probably didn't successfully ride a bike the first time so don't expect to create an award winning design straight away.

I have deleted my other design and made a completely new one, this time it is much better and the colours clash a bit more.It took me 1 hour to do.

Have a look, and please comment!

I don't think you're quite understanding the difference between clash and contrast. Believe it or not, the second version clashes worse than the first one. When using closely similar colors together like that, the eye doesn't have a place to concentrate. You might as well have made the whole site in one color. What you want to do is pick a couple of colors that look good together, but don't concentrate all the attention to one place. As easy as this sounds, it is the hardest thing in the world to do.

Let's say your creating a site. You decide to use orange and blue together (which surprisingly contrast well together). One shade too dark or too light on either spectrum, and you've pretty much screwed the pooch. Pretty much the only color that I have seen that contrasts with anything is white. They're a few sites out there that can help you get a good color combination together. Hope this helps a little bit.

when designing sites, u should also take into consideration how the site physically works and links in to a CMS or any web system. Joomla i know on one hand is rather slow, and having a PNG template will not help. By the looks of things, i can see that you are using dreamweaver to do this site.....using web template systems in joomla isnt that simple.....and you have to link it all in with the CMS. Also when designing, u use content boxes....."personal favorite" its only going to be one fav, so why the box so big? you wont be able to fill it? you might be able to use my cms when its done, ive created my own template system for it, ill just create a new module tht allows ecomerce in it.....my cms is that "tutorial cms" that alot of people are interested in.

as you using simple round edges ad boxes, just use mootools js libary, it can apply round corners on divs :)

so you could make the whole site with no images...super fast loading speeds!! depending on host...

anyway, give the guy a break guys, we all started like this. we should be encouraging him, not dissing him. Give him credit for what he has achieved, i know for one thing, when i started, frontpage was my friend, and html was like....errr....whats html, whats a title tag! lol

keep up the work!!
