[Lastcrime]

id like to create a website..ive done some tutorials and have a pretty good idea of how to design and code it. So i do not need help there.

What i'd like to know is how to host it. Im on a mac and they come with a server itself and u can set that up. Once i set that up im not sure how to get a domain name like www.lastcrime.com or something like that. all i have setup know is a dyndns ip thing so that the website can work under a name like lastcrime.dyndns.org similar to that. This allows me to acces the website without puting the ip address in. Id like to get rid of this and setup something like www.lastcrime.com

that paragraph might sound a bit confusing, but any ideas?

You probably don't want to host your site on your own computer. Not only will it lag something awful from having a slow connection, but it will also slow down your computer. If you were to host your site at your place, you would want a dedicated machine with an uninterrupted power source, and dedicated highspeed internet line with a high upload rate and a dedicated IP address. All of this is not cheap.

Although, you are on a mac and I believe that with a Mac if you get a .Mac account they offer you free webspace and a name. That would probably be better answered by someone who has a mac and maybe does this.

i dont really care if it gets many hits and if it lags a whole lot its mainly just for my screwing around and creating stuff... besides this id still like to know how to get a domain name like www.lastcrime.com or something and how i could host this. thnx for the headsup though.

i also have a pc that i could do it on to so its not just a mac that im based on if anybody knows how to do it on a pc that would be fine to.

Well, I've never used DynDNS before but taking a quick look at their website if you want to use your own Domain Name with this service you'd need to sign up for their "Custom DNS" service which looks to be right at $25 a year.

I would have the same concerns that Craige mentioned, but I know friends who do the exact same thing you're talking about not only b/c it's gives them complete control over their "server" but because it is generally a heck of a lot cheaper than paying for hosting yourself ($25 a year plus $10 for a domain name isn't bad at all).

You can go to ddboard.com which offer a free TLD domain name and find free web hosting there.
And 110mb.com is a free web hosting without advertisements.
