While reading a book I was stumped by a direction

Highlight the weight attribute and then click+drag with you MMB in the viewport

can someone tell me what it means?

dunno what program, so dunno the weight attribute (must be in some palette), but then you have to go back into the window where your model is (that called a "viewport") and click your Middle Mouse Button (and keep it down) while you move your mouse.

Well back to the topic, I still don't understand what the book is trying to teach me. Here are the instructions:

Construction History

Tweak the planes as follows:

o Select the Split Edge Ring Tool in the toolbox or press the Y hotkey

o Split any vertical edge of the plane

o Press the Q hotkey to exit the tool

o Press the F8 hotkey to go back into Object Mode

o With the plane selected, highlight the polySplitRing node int the Inputs section of the Channel Box

Notice the construction history was conserved and that the split can still be modified

o Highlight the Weight attribute and then click+drag with your MMB in the viewport. //This is where i got confused XD

Note: You can change the location of the split interactively even after it's created

o Change Absolute Weight to On

A relative split will follow the shape of the mesh smoothly, while an absolute split will conserve an equal distance entirely along the closest edge. Changing the Direction attrbute will make the split follow the opposite edge.

The book is: Hyper-Realistic Creature Creation by Eric Miller, Paul Thuriot, Jeff Unay & edited by Marc - Andre Guindon

// The book was supposed to be for Maya 7 xD

ok well I donno if this is right but from my guess right now what you have to do is...

First I guess you should have already selected the plane and in the channel box click and have the attributes of the polySplitRing showing... and one of it's attributes should be Weight... witch you have to click and drag it with your MMB (middle mouse button) to the viewport which is where you your plane is situatied... or the main window with all your models in it.... the only hting is I donno if you have to drag it on the plane or anywhere in the viewport... becaus I know sometimes you have to drag it on the specific object and sometimes you have to just drag it to an open space... so try one or the other and let me know what happens...

also becareful becaus sometimes the problem is with the MMB becaus if its a scrolling wheel sometimes it messes it up and it wont properly click or even you might not even have maya set for a 3 button mouse... which you can verify if you go to Window>Settings/Preferences>Preferences ... but I don't think maya 8 has that... only older versions becaus I remember my maya 7 had it...

but yeah tell me if you need more help if yes at the same time post a screenie of your hole screen while you have your plane selected with the channel Box opened and the polySplitRing selected

jpeg isnt the only format you can upload.

But off course most native files are not supported for obvious reasons (virus / filesize), so just try different formats.
on the other hand i think only jpeg and gif and html are supported :(
