It's like trying to find a brand spanking new car... Not that I've ever had to buy a car before... heck, I only just got my Learner Driver Licence lol!

Okay...

Logitech diNovo Edge
Worlds first rechargable keyboard!
Posted Image

This keyboard truly is one of the most amazing and stunning keyboards I've ever come across! I've been interested in buying one of these for a couple of months now. The only thing that's been holding me back is the price tag on this thing. I know it's probably well worth it, but what do you guys think?

This is apparently the first ever rechargable keyboard. It has a charging base, and from what I've read it's truly mind blowing! So, you put it on the charger for about 5 minutes, and it's charged for the next couple of hours (this is all from memory from where I read somewhere). If you charge it for about 2 hours, I think it's basically charged for 1-2 months or so. Now that is outstanding!

Another awesome thing is the Touch Disc. So you basically have your mouse and keyboard in one, meaning you can take it where ever you want, and still have full control of the computer. I think this keyboard was more designed for the lounge room, as some reviews suggest.

YouTube reviews:
http://www.youtube.c...r...dge&search=
Also take a look at . This guy's a home user and not one of those review corporations, which is good if you just want to get the thoughts and opinions of an everyday user.

Google Search for reviews:
http://www.google.co...&...earch&meta=

One thing that a lot of people seem to be disliking about the diNovo Edge is that is has no Num Pad :o Yeah... that's something that's discouraging me a little, too! :( Other than that, this thing is looking so beautiful! I want one! LOL!

But it doesn't stop there. I took the liberty NOT to be stubborn enough to buy the diNovo Edge straight away, and see what other similar keyboards there were around that might match up to it. The only thing I could find close enough was:

Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000
Introducing the first ever rechargable back-lit keyboard!

Posted Image

This one really does have me drewling almost as much as the diNovo Edge :o It's got one thing that the Logitech keyboard is missing, and that's the backlit feature for the keyboard. That would make it so much more handy in the dark. If the diNovo Edge had a backlit keyboard, I reckon I'd have it by now.

YouTube reviews:
Couldn't find much... the only one I could find was in some other language - German, I think, lol! In fact, I haven't been able to find much in the way of reviews for this keyboard.

____________________________________________________________________________

I'm really looking to buy one of these tomorrow... probably off eBay. I'd really love all the help I can get to decide on which one would be best, if any. If you have another suggestion, please, by all means, let me know! I'm not about to waste over $200 just for a keyboard that I might not have looked at close enough - you guys might know even more than me in this case about these keyboards.

Who knows... maybe it's best just to stick with a standard $20 one... after all - it only needs to type for you... oh, and play games! LOL!

Oh, the reason why I referred this situation to buying a "brand spanking new car" is because those top notch cars with all those awesome features aren't really necessary... you just need a mid-range car that will drive you places, yet have decent enough stuff to keep you satisifed (ie. Air Con, Power Steering, etc.)

Hope you guys can help me out on this one  Sorry the post is so long

-- Joshua

Quite honestly don't like your first choice, if anything goes wrong with the charger what then? And they can fail. And I don't like the look of the 2nd one lol sorry but it looks weird. I'm fussy

If your an avid FPS gamer then stay away from wireless keyboards and mice. You get a reduced response time that can be critical. this is more pronounced with mice and joysticks but is also a problem with the keyboards.

The other issue with this keyboard is the fact that there is no number pad. This may or may not be an issue for you.

I'm not sure how the recharging of a keyboard would go. If your keyboard goes flat, then I presume you have to wait until you have charged it up before you can continue your work.

The final point is that any battery driven mouse increases the weight of said mouse. Most noticeable if you do any type of design work, play RTS or FPS games, do any activity that requires a lot of fine grained repetitive movements with the mouse. The main reason why I ditched my cordless mouse is because of the repetitive strain injury that it was causing.

If you want backlight, go for the G15. Note however that after a year of use the pain on the keys will start to rub off and you get light bleed around the edges of commonly used keys. I can try and take a photo to show you (i have this problem on my keyboard) but I dont have a tripod so no idea if I can take a photo that is useful.

The people I'm buying it off have a 3 year Warranty included with the keyboard, just incase anything like that does happen.

Neither did I... but it has backlit keys so yeah...

That's actually not a bad looking keyboard. I'll have a look into that one as well.

If your an avid FPS gamer then stay away from wireless keyboards and mice. You get a reduced response time that can be critical. this is more pronounced with mice and joysticks but is also a problem with the keyboards.

I'm not really into gaming anymore. I used to be, but I now game rarely... Having said that, I think Logitech have put a lot of thought into the making of this keyboard. They've introduced the PerfectStroke™ key system - A precision micro-scissors mechanism distributes typing force evenly across key surfaces, making every stroke natural and fluid.

All-in-all, I'm not too fussed about this. This Wireless Keyboard is really different to any other one you've probably experienced.

The other issue with this keyboard is the fact that there is no number pad. This may or may not be an issue for you.

I'm not sure how the recharging of a keyboard would go. If your keyboard goes flat, then I presume you have to wait until you have charged it up before you can continue your work.

Having no number pad drew me greatly to the decision that I shouldn't buy it. Although I don't use the Num Pad that often, I still use it for a few things. Not having it on the keyboard would bring me to tears... no, not literally LOL!

As for the charging - Did you read what I posted in my first post? LOL! Yes, what if the keyboard goes flat? Well, people have reviewed that in only 5 minutes, you'll have your keyboard charged for about 2 hours!! So, imagine if you left it on to charge for about 2 hours... you'd have it for almost a month!

The insane recharge times is something that got me hooked on getting one of these keyboards in the first place. I don't think running out of battery power will be something to worry about :) Just take 5 minutes to rest during your work hours and get started again for the next 2 hours LOL!

I think you've got the wrong idea here, LOL! I would never use the touch disc on the keyboard for gaming, photoshop work or anything like that! I'll still have my corded mouse handy, right beside the keyboard - the touch disc would be just for those times when I'm sitting back on my photon lounge (is that how you spell photon?), watching movies or just surfing the web. That way I don't have to be right in front of my PC to do anything.

If you want backlight, go for the G15. Note however that after a year of use the pain on the keys will start to rub off and you get light bleed around the edges of commonly used keys. Haha, I've had so many friends tell me of this story. Not cool.

Anywho... still deciding - I don't think I'll go for that Microsoft keyboard though Posted Image

Top one... 350 bucks for a keyboard.. nup.

and the MS one would not be much less.. more than likely more.
I would never pay that price for something as simple as a keyboard.

So sorry Bug cannot help you in choosing one of those.

Ahh for some reason I thought you were buying a cordless mouse as well. My comments above were more for cordless mice, which I have had more than enough experience with.

My comments about the keyboard was more about the hassle of managing when it's flat. Inevitably you will not realise that it is almost flat and forget to charge it and one day it will be flat. Then you will have to wait for it to charge. Also presuming that a 3 hour charge will give you x hours is not a good idea. Find out some info on the type of batteries it use. Over time batteries become less and less efficient and eventually you will need to replace them. Are they replaceable? How long before you will need to recharge within a 2 hour period, etc.

Ok I have to say.. Thats cool, but not 350 dollars cool. Buy a sweet looking one for like 150 and give the rest to a charity. No offence hear but thats a lot of money for a keyboard.

I would never buy it retail. I can get it on eBay for about $200AUS - That's like $150 off the RRP! :)

I managed to find and download the logitech low-down of the keyboard - 14 pages of awesome stuff! I can't even remember where I found it, so I'll include it as an attachment to this post. Basically, here's some more info on the battery life of the keyboard and other cool stuff I found :)

Li-ion Fast-Charge Technology and Charging Station
It’s no longer necessary to keep a supply of batteries on hand – the diNovo Edge is the first Logitech keyboard to feature advanced rechargeable Li-ion batteries. Li-ion batteries have an advantage over NiMH batteries because they do not lose power when not in use, and they are less bulky.

Crafted from the same high-gloss black Plexiglas as the keyboard, the included stylish stand serves as both a recharging station and a display base. When inserted in the stand, the keyboard rests vertically, showing off its ultra-slim design and revealing valuable desk space.

A five-minute charge in the charging station provides approximately one day of power. A two-hour charge provides enough power for approximately two months of normal use. The batteries last the life of the keyboard and should not need replacing.

Illuminated Battery Indicator
Using the same stealth orange-glow backlighting to indicate remaining battery capacity, the diNovo Edge precisely monitors battery strength assuring that users have adequate operating power.

You can read the rest of the product's detailed review @ Attached File  dinovo_edge.doc   6.57MB   42 downloads. If you don't feel like reading through all of that, just take a quick look at http://www.logitech....d...92&cl=au,en - go to the Specifications section - it has stuff on Power and Battery life there as well as other stuff.

Hmm... Li-ion batteries... hmm... I would still be worried about the life of the batteries. Apple claimed their batteries would last the life of the device, which is fine if you replace em each year. Also note that the life of the device will be only as long as the warranty. If you wish to spend that much money (in USD I presume) and then have to spend the same in 3 years time, feel free. however I do agree with others that there are better ways to spend the money.

In a year or so the keyboard will be sub $200 I reckon.

:edit:

as for ebay, either its stolen or its a knock of and not original. okay for your nike branded t-shirt, but not good for electronic goods. most knock offs are poor imitations. and forget about a warranty.

I hardly doubt it. The people I want to buy with have their own eBay shop. They'd have no hope of surviving if all their computer/electronic were all crap - they'd be stripped off from eBay in no time!

Australian eBay search:
http://search.ebay.c...l...&category0=

The one I'm looking at: (although there's others there going on Auction instead of Buy It Now)
http://cgi.ebay.com....1QQcmdZViewItem

If you notice, they've actually got their own eBay computer store, and what not.

If you'd prefer it, I might as well buy from a retailer. Looking for the cheapest prices though... hmmm:

ahh sorry mate, didn't realise it was a fellow Aussie posting. Yeah those buy it now ones look legit. They're locally located and not from Hong Kong. Its the shonky ones that are selling from China or Hong Kong that you gotta watch out for.

Hmm can't look at that first link. but the second works. $239 seems reasonable, I would consider buying one for that price... will have to have a think about it... maybe for xmas :angrylooking:

Not to worry, mate :angrylooking: Yeah, I would never buy something like this from some "shonky" place in Hong Kong/China etc... that would probably be the worst mistake in history.

That first link isn't working? Just search for dinovo edge in the eBay search then.

But yeah, like I said - awesome price! I would never buy it if you could only get it at like $350.

lol are you serious? You do know China does over half the production for Logitech I hope. If you have a Logitech product in your house look at the flipside Made In China.
Myself and NGPixel bought from a guy in Hong Kong on ebay, he shipped us our goods quicker than what we can get them from the US, no diff to what we can buy here except they were $80-$100 cheaper, and still cheaper to what the US ebay shops had them for.

Majority of what we see in ebay shops comes from Hong Kong in bulk, sellers buy them at cost (could be missing software or a remote etc, slight scratches when they were in the factory) then they sell them at higher prices which is still cheaper than what we pay in retail.

There is a difference between made in china and a fake made in china. When buying things like memory it's like playing two up as to whether you get a legit product, a rebadged product (either slower or smaller size) or an empty shell. A lot of electronic products are big targets for cheap imitations and it's quite common for dodgy stuff to be sold on ebay from Hong Kong or China.

I know people who have received what looked legit but upon closer investigation proved not to be, and I know people who have received legit stuff that turned out okay. Personally for something I want a warranty for or is expensive I wouldn't be willing to buy from an overseas eBay site.

:edit:

I have also known people to get stuff made in China, shipped over and sold as legit brand name gear when it's not (this is more the clothes and accessories market). The way these people scam to get good ratings is crazy.

Hmm anyway, I'm sorta getting sidetracked from the OP. Buying the keyboard from a shop setup on the aussie ebay site when your in Australia is generally safe. I would still be wary of risky products like memory, torches, clothes, etc, but if they have an ACN then should be okay (an ABN means bugger all and offers no protection).
