Start by doing an xml driven image gallery tutorial. Once you have that working, I can help you get random transitions. There is no easy way for Flash to read the contents of a folder, so you'll have to get the image urls either hard coded in Flash, or pass them in with xml.
The only ways to access a folder that I am aware of is to purchase and use MDM Zinc, or make a wrapper for the swf using something like C#.
