How to make a dna twirl?

Hi .. I have looked every where for a tutorial that shows how to make this dna kind of effect. En example is here

to some extent it can be made in both PS and Illustrator using paths and setting up repetitive move/scale/rotate options. For complex shapes and twirls which utilizes mixed perspectives (like in your example image) id recommended the use of a 3d oriented application such as cinema 4d, blender or 3ds studio max.

First creating a plane 2 sided sheet and apply a lined texture with transparency between the lines to the sheet. Then twist it around with the applications native tools and modifiers, set up a camera with a dramatic point of view and focal length and render it to a tiff with a stored alpha channel for the transparency, then do recoloring and additional effects in PS.

That the basic work flow id use. If you cannot find a specific tutorial that takes you all the way then you have to combine smaller tutorials, basic primitives-> modeling -> uv mapping and texturing -> rendering and collect your knowledge that way.

In illustrator:

make random curve with pentool (copy and past it several times if you want):

position them;

then use blend tool:

this you can do with several curves and several colors.
each will have dif results !
experiment!

f.ex. blend in 5 steps, then change color of those 5 and blend again... just little tip.
