I want to mask a gradient over an object to give it a shine effect. I've gone through every tutorial on here, and the conclusion I've come to is that they're written if you want to mask a flash-created shape. I have an image that importing that I'd like to mask though, and it's not quite as convenient as a rectangle, so is there a way I can apply a mask without having to make a shape of the object?

Nope :( Unless it's a transparent png (actually, it still might not work)

Now, I'm not entirely sure if this will work, however, if you try using the bitmapData API, you may be able to create an image of only solid pixels (ie, removing any transparent pixels) to make a shape of the object. Copy that shape into a movie clip and use that clip as the mask.

Like I said...no idea if it'll work (I've never tried it) but it's the best thing I can think of right now.

Good Luck.
