I have narrowed my choice of a new laptop to either an HP or a Sony. With all other things (such as processor, RAM, etc) being equal, do you prefer Sony or HP laptops? Is there any articles on good unbais reviews of laptops?

Sony by far. HP is same as saying Compaq and compaq is same as saying junk.. need I say more ;}
I have had both compaq (HP) and Sony and the compaq landed in the trash can (cause I tossed it there) and the Sony I had for a couple of years and it never missed a beat.. that was until I spilt coffee on it. Doh!.
But the compaq crashed,, hung many many times and was just a pain in the butt. So I tossed it in the trash can.

I disagree in a way. The compaq was and still is a budget line (i.e. its a pile of crap for anyone doing serious computing). HPs on the other hand from experience are actually very solid. I know a couple of people who have them including my sisters and although it's relatively slow in comparison to modern day computers its still very "solid".
Sony on the other hand are a brand. And that's it. You are paying for the sony or vaio logo on the front. As far as the actual system performance I have no experience but read some reviews, most I have haven't been exactly ground breaking (although I had been looking at mid rage sonys).
On the other hand (and this half of me agrees with Creative Insanity), HP are known for having poor driver support and there are a few issues in their current DV line which are apparent throughout. (Webcam and over heating being the worst).
I would still go for the HP however, they are the top manufacturer (actually they may be 2nd now after Dell) for a reason.
The components are really decided by how you configure the machines, can't say anymore than that.
As for reviews, I suggest http://notebookreview.com as a lot of them are user reviews and even those that aren't are very good.

Alright here's my point of view
First I totally agree with Matthew. HP laptops cannot be compare to compaq. Compaq is the cheap version. It's like saying Squire Basses are the same as Fender Basses (sorry I'm a bass player). HP laptops are way way better than Compaq laptops.
I've had my HP laptop for 2 years now and I love it. I have had to look for drivers but I've always found the ones I needed (it took a while). I've been running Vista and there hasn't been a problem either.
From searching stores (Future Shop, Best Buy, Tiger Direct) I've found that Sony laptops are generally more expensive than HP for the same specs because you are paying a premium for the brand. If you can find the same laptop with the same specifications then your personal opinion because hardware wise both will be fine.

Well I dont know what models are available in USA, normally Australia doesn't have the entire range. I do have a Sony laptop and I love it, the build quality is brilliant and the usual vendor bloatware is actually quite useful.
However from what I have seen the HP's are generally cheaper than the Sony's for the same features. You will get more bangs for your bucks by buying a HP. That is in Australia anyway, cannot comment on American comparisons sorry.
