Something that I've thought about before and thought it would be a good idea... I have wondered whether getting your own name as the domain and creating a website with that name would be something good, and/or be an advantage to yourself in the future. It could be like MySpace or something, where the website is about yourself.

I have wondered whether I, myself, should buy my own domain name using my real name and create a website about myself; not to be big-headed or anything, but to act as a blog or something similar to that. This was only thought about recently and I don't plan to go ahead with the idea until I organise a point behind it but I thought it would encourage some discussion here on P2L regarding this issue.

What do you all think about registering a domain name using your real name and creating a website in the form of a blog or something similar?

Would love to hear from everyone, thanks a lot! This will also give me an idea of whether I should go ahead with my idea or not.

Please take into account all aspects from the advantages to the disadvantages; get posting!

I think that if you use your own name for the domain name you are pretty limited to what you can have on the site. like if i was to make a website called ThomasHall.com i would only really have a Wordpress blog on there and blog my every day doings and probably have a portfolio.

But the other day I purchased the domain name MacAndTosh.com (A play on the word Macintosh) it is a Mac Resource website/MacBlog/Personal Blog

It is great because im not stuck on 1 topic, although its pretty much Mac based, but I can also post things about Windows and Mac, my college life and lots more.

So, the domain name plays a very important part on the website content, so choose wisely and be careful because if you choose to have yourname.com you may be limited to content.

My thoughts

I asked myself this not so long ago.

I own MattJewell.com and Mediascratch.com and was debating which one to use for a blog/playground type site. I have decided to use mediascratch in truth mainly because I don't like my name...heh. Aside form that it si also more brandable and versatile as far as site content goes like G4DGET. said - but if my name was "Thomas Hall"...I would have used that domain because I think it's more appropriate for the type of site I want.

I think it all comes down to the content you put on the site. For example -> a photographers website would be good to be just the name. Often a photographer doesn't go and create a "photography company" to work as, but rather just use their name. Same could go for a fashion designer. On the flip side, a web designer/developer is more likely to work under some sort of company name.

Most people who use their name as a domain would use it as a blog/protfolio. Like when I was doing my portfolio couple of years ago I registered matt-license.com

I am starting to get an idea of the many things I should think about before purchasing the domain and creating my website. I am 100% sure it will include a blog of my day-to-day life as well as a normal functioning website, but I am still debating whether I should get a forum or not. Again, like everyone has said, it depends on my content and it really isn't too broad.

I appreciate your replies and I'll keep everyone posted on what I plan to include on this website (if I do go ahead with the project).

Until then, I would appreciate many more replies!

hmm good question...

If you go for a solid blog then yeah pick your name that will do pritty good...

If you plan to do something about you and then add GFX things, other stuff that is related to you then yeah maybe go for something difrent like shubsplace.com or something...

Adding a forum you only do when you got a big community that has to contact and talk... If you got like over 100 comments on your blog on a day then add a forum... Else your forum will be plain empty

Mainly sites based on names are blogs/portfolios like stated, i "KINDA" used my name in my site lol "eSeM" is my initials SM :)

If you go with forums, i wouldn't advise on a personal titled site.

Thanks for your reply shub and SatanicPenguins. I was actually going to base the whole domain/website in a blog. And I was going to do what you said in regards to a forum, exactly. Once I recieve about 100+ comments on my blog, I will think about getting a forum. To be honest, the only traffic that I will get in the early stages of the project will be real-life friends. It's always a good start I guess and I plan to get more traffic as time passes, like everyone else who owns websites.

I will also think about adding my own creations and artworks which would include things made on the computer and things done in real-life. As I've said before, I will have to start writing things down and come up with a design that would suit what information I want displayed on the website. I can't distinguish whether I want a blog to act as the site, or have a website and a blog; posts, opinions and/or critique about this would be appreciated.

Thanks again and I hope to hear from you both soon. :P

Would anyone else like to provide me with some information, suggestions, critique, etc, about whether it's a good idea using your real name for your own domain name?

Thanks.
