so i have an old g3 with tiger on it, its not usefull for much other than listening to music and chatting on msn. bout it.

I'd like to use it as a server and host my own website. I know you can go into system preferences and host that way but that only allows you to host as your ip.

I was wondering if there were any other ways to do this?

and if not can you use apples built in server and use your domain name with it?

The option in system preferences to start "Personal Web Sharing" or something is basically an option to turn apache on and off.

[brunty@Jona] ~ $ sudo apachectl start
Password:
Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
 Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
 Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/brunty.conf
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd started
[brunty@Jona] ~ $

That's what the option in the system preferences pane does - starts and stops apache. If you're behind a router you can turn port forwarding on to forward any incoming HTTP requests to the 'servers' IP - also you can setup a DynDNS account to allow hosting.

You'll probably need to do some editing of config files to get exactly what you want but I hope I provided a little bit of information for you

Oh, this website might give some useful info for what you're trying to acheive.

Yes a very simple process. You can also go to no-ip.com if you use a dynamic IP and then set an address for your IP what ever it is and a small client will set it all up when you turn the system on and you don't need to do anything with your dynamic IP. All NZ ISPs use dynamic IPs and I have used no-ip.com many times and it is very good,

Like Matt said, If you open system prefs and click sharing and turn on personal web sharing, this will turn on apache for you and then you have a server running. Make sure your server has a fixed IP address and then in your router setup a virtual server to point to that IP address on port 80 and walla.

Correct.. you cannot view a webserver from within the same network on that URL. You can only access that with in your network with it's IP address.
Your router will not let you back trace.

So for example you have setup a URL with no-ip or whatever that reads mysite.hopto.org that is the address you advetise to the world. Say that your servers IP is 192.168.1.20, well it is that address that you would access the server within your own local networks.

Just as an example. I have a server setup (CentOS) in the same manner that you want it and if I try and access that with the PUBLIC url I will get this message.

Quote

Object Not Found
The requested URL '/producerface/' was not found on the RomPager server.

Return to last page
This is because my router is stopping the back trace.
But I can access it with the internal fixed IP I have for that server.

Understand now?

Welcome. I hope it is all working now.
If you want to test it then just place a small html file in web root and post the URL and I will see if I can access it here for you in NZ.

If you want some help with this get me on creativeinz@hotmail.com in MSN and I will help you out.

k so im not sure if this is going to work but i will run it by you, if i need further help ill add you on msn.

Anyway, i set up a free domain called freebird.us.tp, i also set up a dyn dns host for my ip; so i put the dyndns host in the freebird.us.tp domain part where it redirects or whatever.

I put a small file in the library, webserver, documents folder (i think this is the right one). It just says welcome.

can you try it out: freebird.us.tp

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at freebird.us.tp.
* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
I don't think you have your virtual server setup correctly. Get me on MSN and I will talk you through it all.
