Any suggestions for how I can improve it would be very welcome.

Generally gray is not a good choice unless its very light or very dark. Add some more color and it would be nice.

I think I actually like the first one best, it looks less "noobish" and the color-scale is more harmonic.

I think that the frame around the content are seems a bit diffuse, also I think that the site seems to have a lot of black-space, areas that are not used for anything.

It also seems rather strange that the menu box collides with the page border. The page as a whole seems rather confusing IMO.

A helpful tip for learning to design a website -> find a site you like and re-make it in photoshop without copying/pasting anything from the site. Don't reuse this design (that would just be wrong), but it will help improve your skills. Also....be careful with bevels/emboss. 95% of the time they look gross.

Concidering its your first attempt it aint all that bad mate.

A tip I'd give would be if your designing layouts have a set colour scheme in mind, e.g. 3,4 or maybe even 5 set colours as long as there all used in monderation. Stick with them, experiment, whatever.

I thought pax's idea was good as well. Good luck keep with it, it'll come :]

Hi,

i am not sure what application you are using to create your website layout. Please check the following:

1. www.gimp.org - free graphic software
2. http://gimp-tutorial...websitetutorial - website layout tutorial

One suggestion color wise. Try to stay away form color swatches. You dont want the colors to be too bright. Its always good to tone them down a little bit. And pick a font that goes with the design of the site. The pixel font u picked seems a little out of place
