Is it really tacky and bad to put adds on a personal portfolio/desing site?

To me: Not really. As long as you aren't over doing it, and they don't stick out like a sore thumb. After all, you've got to get some money, no matter how little, from somewhere, right?
In other words, just make sure they go well with the site at hand, and since I'm guessing you mean Goldfish Graphics:
Don't have big pink flashing adverts all over the page. Instead, have a small, 468 x 60 banner at the bottom of the page, under the main text, with a white background, and maybe orange/gold links, with black text. And have one like that on each page, it'll increase your chances of making money with them, as there more of a chance someone will eventually click them.
Though, if your site doesn't get very many hits, they won't help you tooooooo much, if at all. So if it's still low on hits, I'd wait until it increases a bit.
