Taken in school for photography using manual cameras. I had to scan in image. Looks much better in the photo. The red stands out much more. Also has anyone got any tips for scanning in a photo and trying to keep the same quality?

Well you have a typical photo, with typical mistake. The person in it is standing on the right edge and looking out of the photo from right edge. It makes the wiever concetrate on the right edge and no there is a lot of pointless empty space, which is not noticed by viewer. If she had looked to the left, the viewer woul have noticed the wall and also the gray edge on the left.
