Hallo <3

I'm working on this scene:
Attached File  WIP.jpg   249.91KB   80 downloads
As you can see there's no doors or windows.
Is there a simple technique that let me shape a door/window from a box, place it where I want it and then cut it out of the plane (buildings made out of planes)???

I'm still a newbie to 3D Studio Max so this is properly a simple question :angrylooking:
(And sorry for my bad english)

well I can't really help you on the 3D studio max part but maybe if you look and find maybe a tool called boolean... because thats how we would do it in maya...

correct, boolean in the compound objects. theyre a bit messysometimes though so make sure you have regular backups or cus if they ruin your mesh youre screwed and have to make it again. if youre on max 9 there is cleaner way with power booleans or something like that, that has cleaned things up for me in the part.

personally i stay away from booleans (i model mostly in cad anyways though) unless completely unavoidable. so you could try some poly modelling - using quick slice to slice the plane and then extruding the face inward, then playing about with the vertex/faces a bit. its more time consuming but imo it will give you a cleaner mesh and cause you less trouble. its not hard, and im sure youre already familiar with the concepts of poly modelling as you have got that far and made a beatiful scene already.

on a side note, i love your lighting, great contrast in the shadows. mind sharing your setup? are you using vray? any updates on it so far?

I use them in C4D, but i try to constrain them as much as possible. Usually by starting to make an inner extrude to a size just a bit larger then the cutout.
That way the ugly mess is containt to that window, and usually not noticible when texturing.

yeah that could work... usually I only do it with basic shape of what I need then I fix up the edges and wireframe so that I end up with all quads
