So hartford college, MA had a portfolio day today which is where colleges from around the area send admission officials to critique high school senior portfolio's for college admission. Well i was the only one there with a laptop.... and it was awkard.... but i still went through with showing the officials my digital art. Well they're all closed minded. the RISD official didnt even critique my portfolio, she said regardless of what degree i was applying toward i needed drawn artwork and she went on the explain observational drawings and whatnot dispite the fact i clearly wasn't listening. Then i went to the Syracuse official which I thought would be more open towards the graphic design's but, that she said almost the same thing; That i needed hand drawn work, and then went on to say that my work clearly shows "that I have an extensive knowledge of photoshop" but they want to see art. WHAT!? Digital art is art! I asked her what the difference was and she said that this didn't reflect "hand"-drawings. So it got to the point where she basically said that the Graphic design major only teaches you how to use photoshop, and its your artistic ability that gets you by.
Now im left confused, weither or not to continue persuing graphic design majors or if theres a better major that suits me. I want a major that was braod enough that i could use it for any digital art, 2D or 3D. I really like photoshop but i dont want to make magazine covers for the rest of my life because my college education didnt teach me anything. Can i have someone else's opinion. ohh and i can post my portfolio if that would be helpful.

yeah you should post your portfolio... would help a lot more to see what they saw and critiqued you about...
but I must say that yes in any type of art course you take you will need to free hand draw... no questions asked... because it's easy to have a image of what you want to make in your head, but if you don't make a little sketch up of what you are heading for you will never know how to achieve the maximum of your ability in that peice you work on... I'm currently enrolled in a 3D animation and VFX course and In my first semester I had 3 of my classes that were purely on drawing... even though I was only interested in the computer part of it before but I can see that planning and drawing everythign out ahead of time helps you alot in the end... because you can see changes that might have to be done ahead of time instead of only when the product is done and once it's done it's usually too late to change anything...
It doesnt matter how good you are in photoshop... you will always have to know at least the basics of hand drawing to make it anywhere in your type of work... In my school they also ask to see your hand drawing skills even for web design or graphic design classes... and it should be like that anywhere...
