I am working on a project for my class that involves an abduction with a spaceship. I want to have the ship come over a character and abduct that character. I was wondering if anybody could point me to a good tutorial that would help me do a particle effect for the ray that would come from the ship. Thanks

Adio

Savage... just saying that if you don't really know how to help him then don't make an effort to try.... sorry to sound mean but if you don't know what hes talking about right now then that means you don't know anything about 3D...

and back to subject... well sorry I can't personnaly help you adio because I don't know 3D studio max (I use maya)... but I'll try and find something for you maybe...

Edit: just thought about something... what if you have like a little foggy scene and you add a powerfull enough light source like a spot light and have it shine at something (the person you are abducting) .... kinda like a flash light in a foggy scene... know what I mean? ... was just a thought...

i dont completely understand but i think what you are looking for is called 'volume light' in max.

the bottom of page four of this article (the whole thing is actually a good read btw) http://www.peachpit....a...100599&rl=1 will shed some light on the matter for you (see what i did there? :) ).

have a look on google for 'volume light tutorial 3ds max' or something to that effect and it should bring up a fair few results. i doubt you will find exactly how to do it, but the theory behind it will be the same as using volume light in any other scene.

You could probably just put in a spotlight and pump up the intensity

wouldnt work unfortunately, all it does is increase the intensity at the source and not the air in between (unless used with volume light).

i once tried something like that without the lights, bdw;
i used a cone and animated the shaders on the cone with wery hight transparancy settings and some psychedelic colorgradients. But its a very long timze ago and it wasnt in 3dsmax.
Principle was use cone and make a shader (material) to use the effect. off course to enhance the effect i WOULD use some lights in the cone (shadows off!)

what you could do is make the cone, lower its opacity, and turn on self-illumination (dont remember how to do that) and crank it up a lot

yup, will dramatically decrease render times too but on the other hand it wont look half as good as volume light.

another alternative is to just do it in photoshop after youve rendered it...
