After moving from a lovely (really quite large) house to some rubbish 2 and a half bedroom bungalow so my dad can knock it down and build again (i think it's an esteem issue :P ), living up my nan's for 7 weeks and waiting for broadband for 2, i'm back :D

Ahhh 6mbps....quite nice considering I've never been above 0.5mb :)

Hah, no, I just got my units wrong. 6mb = 600kbps and so on.

UK has nothing above 20mb on any ISP, and that's extremely localised...1-6/8 seems the average.

Is that your actual download speed? (i.e. when you download a file from the internet it downloads at that speed)
/OR/
Is it the speed SpeedTest.net says?

My actual downloads. If you are not getting the speeds you wish, call Virgin, they fix it for you. Thats what happened to me. Im on the biggest package, just give them a call, they will tell you if theres any limitations on your package or they will boost up your connection, they make you reset your modem and turn your PC's and Laptops and other networked things off.. then viola.

:D

Japan is laughing at all, their average internet speed is 60MB Down and like 60MB up. One of the most common ISPs there give 100MB Down and 100MB up for only $30USD ....

Well when your people are in rather dense populations and not spread out everywhere it is easier to concentrate your servers for more specific regions thus giving a higher speed. The USA on the other hand is a huge area to cover with many many more people.

It's mainly to do with the quality of the cabling...

yeah...that hurts me. our cabling is 18 years old under ground except for the last 60 feet which my father and I dug up and redid, but then most of the cable in our house is 5-18 years old...slows it down
