Ok, i'm not sure why but this doesn't seem to work.
<script language="javascript">
document.myForm.message.focus()
</script>

it wont automaitcally place into the message text box

my other question is, would this work?

<a href="java script:document.myForm.message.focus(':biggrin:')">:)</a>


would that work?
