Javascript not working properly

I'm currently having a go at implamenting this script into my site's portfolio page. I've having a bit of trouble however.

First off, instead of the image appearing in front of all of the content, like on the example, it appears whereever I place the 

<script src="/php/thumbnailviewer.js" type="text/javascript" />

Secondly, the loading image and test both appear before the link is clicked on, when it shouldn't (see example)

Does anyone have any ideas as to where i've gone wrong?

Yes. The script's instructions state: "Add the following to the <head> section of your page:"-not in the body. Follow the instructions on the page that you posted.
