For UNI I was required to create a head. I had to create the head by creating a egg shape sphere and then using the sculpt geometry tool to sculp the nose, eyebrows, mouth. I then created two sphere's that i used for the eyes. I now need to texture the head. I have textured the eyes but I Now need to create a skin/head texture for my head. How can I create a head texture using the hypershader or by creating a PSD network and using photoshop to create the texture. I Have only just learnt how to use the hpershader and photoshop to create textures so I need a simple tutorial or explanation on how to create a head texture.

Cheers,
James

Maya is a very tedious thing to learn and texturing, from what I think, is the most painful process. Even my professor would agree that Skin is the most difficult thing to resemble in 3D space.

What makes skin different from any texture is that in order to resemble skin perfectly, you have to have as smooth as possible geometry, or even subdivisions/NURBs to make the texture look right. Most video game companies have problems with skin and attaching rigid binds to it is because it will stretch the texture across the polygon.

The best way to tackle skin is to use multiple layers of textures. This can be accomplished through Photoshop, or Maya's interface itself using a Layered Texture node. Normally what works best is Lambert because it has the most basic of looks to it. Some people have used Phong to recreate the lighting on the skin, but Lambert is satisfiable.

From whatever you choose to use, you should find a good color to use for the skin. Find people on Google and sample their skin at what colors you want it to be. The next step should be texturing the pores on the skin (if that's how in depth you want to go) and utilize a 2D file placement. Change the scale accordingly and test how it looks then. If from a very zoomed out look it appears bad, you may want to ditch it. But if you're doing close up renders, then it's worth a try.

That's all I can advise from a standpoint of my own experience. Best of luck to you.

Well I don't know if what Leibrockoli said helped you or not and also I'm not to sure on what you need done also but from what I can see you pretty much have the geometry done for your head and now you want to texture it?

first I'm guessing your using poly's since you used the sculp geometry tool... so what you will need to do is UV map your character and with that done you will be able to create a network .psd image with your wireframe UV layout on it and then in photoshop you can color in and texture your guys head.... if you want me to elaborate more on what I am talking about then please feel free to either respond here or send me a quick privit message and I will try to give you a more detailed explenation with maybe a couple screen shots or even direct you to some good tutorials
