Well... Google says: "A large, bound volume containing samples of past work and used by an agency or an artist to promote business."
But a lot of people use the term "portfolio" very loosely on their websites... I have seen portfolios which include a blog as well as an Archive of past work etc.
In a portfolio you would usually see:
A Gallery: To show work you have done in the past for either showing off or for personal use or to show potential customers examples of what you can do etc.
Contact Details: So if someone stumbles upon your website and likes what they see in your gallery, can easily contact you for work!
Personal Profile: Usually so that the potential customer or browser can get more information about you. Not essential, but it's nice to know who you're dealing with.
Blog: Again, not essential, but it's cool to have a Blog on your portfolio website to counter having too many websites, it just puts it all into 1 online space!
Fakens blog/portfolio is a good example of what to include: http://www.danrichard.com/
See he has a blog/rambling (As always
) news and announcements etc. He also has his type of portfolio: http://www.danrichar...ject-summaries/
But as it is all about Faken, he has also added in downloads etc. these arent essential, but if you want to fill up your nav or just somewhere to let people download your files from, you can always use your portfolio
I hope this helps you!
Good luck with your portfolio dude!

If you are a designer and not a great coder like me, I suggest using WordPress... Then you can have your blog on the front page and add pages to the blog so you can have things like; Portfolio, Gallery, Downloads, Contact, About etc.!
WordPress really is an unlimited resource and its opensource, so if you want it to behave slightly different, feel free to mess around with the code a little! It's really up to you how you use it.
If in fact you are a coder, I 100% reccomend coding it yourself. Theres nothing better than using something you have made, unless you like to blame someone else if something goes wrong!
Good luck bro!
