hello all,

i am trying to convert myself from table design to css designs and i have a question on how something in done in css. lets take something simple like having a gradient around a box to give a raised appearance. normally in tables i could have 3 columns and the left and right ones would be height:auto with a background repeat of Y and it will stretch fine with the content from the middle column.

now, lets say i want to do something like this in css, i know that i can float 3 divs next to each other to acheive the look, but i cant get the left and right shadows to stretch with the content in the middle unless i use a specific height. im not sure how the "clearfix" thing works but i think that might be what i need? (or something similar to that) i can put together a quick sample if it would help but this would help me get a jump start to css designs.

thanks for the help!

This is a common question. Try researching Faux Columns. Basically what you need is a repeating background image to give the illusion that there are columns. Check out this article.
