Lol, something I'm working on at the moment, a Super Mario Bros. themed website.. Not sure what kind it will turn out to be yet but this is how far I am after approx. 1 1/2 Hours (Spent quite some time looking for screens/renders..)

I'm planning on using an animation as well; When one clicks on a link, the well known piranha-plant will pop out of the tube and go back in like in the game and the page will then change xD

you committed to the design a lot which is very cool, but I think this is a little too gimmicky to be effective design. I am kind of an advocate against using images for links as well, so in keeping with that you should eliminate the text in the image and hand code it in instead.

also using flash is becoming sort of a faux pas these days so there is that too.

with all that aside it is very evident that you are an effective designer because this would be a very well designed piece of art, as a website however I think it is much less effective.
