I want to create a space between the bottom of the page and the footer, also known as a margin. I tried the margin bottom property on the container but it didn't work and I've tried other things but nothing seems to effect that space. Can anyone offer me some guidance?

You could try putting padding-bottom:10px; on the body. Can't see why margin-bottom wouldn't work on the container though... looks like it should!

Tried it, to no avail, I tried it on the footer as well. But it just makes the image repeat at the bottom.

So set the image to no-repeat, or repeat-x.
