Just looking to make a fresh website, was wondering what would be the ideal dimensions to use so the page would display well on most resolutions....?

Most users have a resolution of 1024x768 pixels. So you can eaasily have up to 1000px in width. But a lot of people have even higher resolutions than 1024. So dont make your width 100%. It will only be streched too much i.e. < 1280. And don't have the site more than 2-3 screen pages long. To much to scroll, and read.

it depends on your preferance, i usually go with eather 740 or full screen. 740 because it fits onto those 800*600 screens, and leaves space for the scroll bar and a little background image/colour.
Lol, i learnt that from jaymz

State your source? This Site says that 800x600 is. I don't see the problem with stretching layouts, in fact my site uses them and I've yet to hear a complaint...

It depends, according to my own observations, about 90% of my customers are on 800x600, because it comes standard on most pc's. I retract my earlier statement, it's best to tailor to your audience

http://www.w3schools...wsers_stats.asp
It also states:

Statistics Are Often Misleading
You cannot - as a web developer - rely only on statistics. Statistics can often be misleading.
Global averages may not always be relevant to your web site. Different sites attract different audiences. Some web sites attract professional developers using professional hardware, other sites attract hobbyists using older low spec computers.
Also be aware that many stats may have an incomplete or faulty browser detection. It is quite common by many web stats report programs, not to detect new browsers like Opera and Netscape 6 or 7 from the web log.

you say whatever percent views at 1024x768 well then if it was designed for 800x600 it would still look fine at 1024x768 so y not make it good for both and go with a little less then 800x600?

If you use a static high, then you almost bounded to iframes. And iframes suck!
If you use a higher resolution than the minority 800x600 users (29% according to Donnas suggested site) maybe they will change their mind and oick a higher resolution. Who today have a monitor or graphic card that does't support 1024. That can only be like 5% or less. I can't understand how people even can use 800. Everything is so big! So if they can't see the site properly they either horisontal scroll or change their resolution. See it as a mission to convince everyone that they should use >=1024. Look at P2L. Like 1000px wide. That's the spirit!
