Hey all,
Just a quick question. I'm helping my brother with some artwork using PS 7 (not used it for some time). When I add an adjustment layer such as a 'curves' or 'colour balance' layer I can't format the layer. That is to say if I select an area with the marquee tool and press delete or run the eraser tool over the adjustment layer nothing happens. The adjustment layer isn’t locked or linked / merged with any other layers. I owned PS 7 some time ago on my own computer and never had this problem.
I've checked the settings and can't seem to find anything that would allow me to adjust the formatting settings of a fill or adjustment layer.
Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Adjustment layers are applied with a mask, as can be seen in the layer window (there is a mask showing). Just click on the mask window within that layer (it should be all white at this point since the adjustment is applied and is showing on the entire canvas), choose a black paintbrush and start brushing or just fill the entire layer. Reverse the process by painting in white, as usually done with a layer mask. You can also use the eraser tool to erase what you've painted on the mask, but its basically the same effect as painting in the opposite color.
Again, when you do this, make sure you've clicked on the mask window within the adjustment layer, (the one on the right), and not on the adjustment window where you get a small view of the curve (for a Curves adjustment).
If that doesn't work, your layer could be locked (with a lock icon on the right side of the layer in the layer window). Just select the layer and press the lock icon again.
Hope this helps

if i remember correcly ctrl+clicking between the layer and the adjustment layer will only apply the adjustment layer to that layer underneath it (been long time, now everything changed for the better on this subject.
