Hey Everyone

I hope that you wouldn't mind spending a few minutes to give me any constructive criticism upon what is my most ambitious work so far!

Being very new at the world of web design, with this being my first layout, I would greatly appreciate any opinions that you may have before I attempt to have a go at slicing and coding the layout.

To give you a brief, this website will hopefully provide a much needed outlet for information from the Medical Society at the Hull York Medical School. My aims during its design were to maintain functionality as the key aspect, but I'll let you decide whether I have succeeded or not :)

As mentioned with this being my first design I would appreciate any constructive comments to help this budding designer on his way!

Thank you

Paneth

Wow, I love it. I have to admit the design is great! I can't wait to see what it will be like when it's coded. Keep us updated!

Great work Paneth, that looks pretty good!

The only thing I am not the most fond of is the reflection of the link text. Also, have you tried making the bar with the links and the search box the same width as the rest of the stuff below it? It might be worth trying to see making it all the same width would improve the look.

Awesome job :hitit:

Wow crazy! :hitit:

Only don't you think the grey background is a a little too darkish? Toning down color to a lighter grey would help it, in my opinion...

Hey everyone thank you so much for taking the time to have a look!

@ TOreDefine, thank you I'm really glad that you like the design and I will try to keep everyone posted about its progress, although I am very conscious of the difficulties I'm going to have to face with slicing and coding so wish me luck!

@ Tyson D, thank you for the comments, I have had a go at making the changes that you have suggested and on a personal opinion I do actually like that the main nav bar is slightly shorter than the rest of the design but please tell me what you think after having a look. Though I will definitely be having a closer look at the reflections for the buttons as these were additions which I was a little unsure of...

@ MyFlash13, I hope that would be crazy in a good way! :hitit: I really appreciate your opinion and once again I would appreciate your feedback on the design after I have changed the background colour

I'm really glad that this is getting some very positive feedback, which should mean that I will hopefully be taking the layout to the next stage very shortly. Once again any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Hey Paneth!
Cool thanks for posting the different suggestions - good thinking! Hm, I could see it going either way, really up to you!

I noticed one other thing that you may want to try... it isn't really a graphic change, just a font colour change. I found the Orange/Yellow colour for the heading fonts might look better if replaced with that navy dark colour you are using or something darker. Good work so far! Be sure to post in the help forum if you get stuck at any time with slicing/making it look the way you've got it set up here when you are actually coding it! Good work!!

Hey all

I guess this question will really show how much of a novice I am to this. My design is currently 800x600 since this was what many tutorial sites that I had visited had started off with, however I am currently wondering whether this is far too small for most new systems, which the majority of people must be upgrading to. Therefore would it be beneficial to apply the layout to a higher resolution and if so what resolution would you suggest?

I know this is a very difficult question and having read the following
article, I am leaning towards maintaining the current resolution but I would really appreciate your opinions.

@Tyson D; Hey it was no problem posting the suggestions, I think that way you also get to see the change. In terms of the font colours I think I will be playing around with them quite a lot after the site is at that stage, ideally I would like to try to maintain a balance between the navy blue and orange which are the HYMS colours. Finally I am sure you will probably be seeing a whole lot of me in the help forum! Thank you for your help.

Hey Paneth! Great question...

This really depends on the site and your preference. Some web sites look better being narrow because of the type of content they display it makes things easy to read. Based on information from w3c schools you can see that as of January 2008, a total of 86% of display resolutions are 1024x768 and higher, nearly half of that 86% is higher. Also almost half of the remaining 14% is unknown. Screen resolutions will never be going back down, anyone using 800x600 resolution is quite outdated (or just has a preference for a very low resolution). Only 8% of displays were known to be 800x600. This number is going to continue to drop. Just as 640x480 slowly vanished off the chart shown here: http://www.w3schools...ers_display.asp 800x600 should do the same in the next years.

You can't go wrong doing 800x600 but otherwise my recommendation is to tailor the resolution to either a % based resolution or 1024x768 definitely. :)

Hey Tyson D

Thank you so much for the advice, I hope to get on to trying to upscale the resolution of my layout shortly and from there put it into its final stages!

Once again thank you for all the feedback and advice I have recieved from everyone!
