I got really interested in dreaming about 3 years back when I had some really crazy dreams. I bought a book about dreaming, which included some chapters on how to remember your dreams when you wake up, explanations about the sleep cycle (REM etc) as well as a chapter on lucid dreaming.
I have to say that I've been lucky enough to have a few lucid dreams, although the last one was quite some time ago. There are different levels of lucid dreaming...for one, you can realize that you are dreaming, but still think that you are bound to the rules of nature (the law of gravity etc). With this, you may want to do something, but you do not think you actually can and thus, you are not fully in control. If and when you do realize that you are in full control and can make things appear/disappear in an instant, go anywhere and do anything you want...it's just amazing. I believe I experienced this once or twice, and it was just absolutely amazing.
So yes, it is possible, but quite difficult to purposely achieve...it really is hard. Some tips in the book I read are to train your mind to look for clues that will trigger you to realize you are dreaming...such as noticing the impossible ("this is impossible, so I must be dreaming") - I've done this and it works (like the situation in the dream just seems too ridiculous, so you know it can't be real), or starring down at your hands (I haven't done this but apparently it looks weird, or they change), or if there is something with words on it, look at it twice or three times...the words will most likely change. Other tips include meditation and using certain herbs, teas etc, none of which I've tried.
