Hey there everyone,

I thought that this would be the best place to post this topic, if it isn't then please would you be able to move it to the right one rather then deleting/closing it? I am thinking of developing a personal site, which will be organised in a category-type set up ranging from my career to my car. I am planning on keeping this as a final online project of mine and therefore want it to be the best. I have owned many sites before all of which haven't really been successful. I know what mistakes I have done and I know how to improve on them, which is why I am so keen and so confident that it will be a success and a major improvement to what I have created before.

In saying this though, there are some questions, opinions and advice that I would like to request from The Admin Zone's members. They all relate to the development of this new project and will really help me get things right and organised for its success.

I have thought about what domain I should get and cannot make up my mind. I have thought about using my name, which isn't a bad idea, however how should I set it out? There are ways that I can spell my name with the end of the actual domain, such as www.garygom.es for example (which is a Spanish extension). Or should I plainly and easily go for something like www.garygomes.com?
In regards to how I will be setting up the website; I will be using WordPress for it all. In my opinion, WordPress is the best content management system out there and it is software that I have used quite a number of times before and is extremely powerful, user-friendly and does the job no matter what the obstacles are.

Some background information for the website to help out with the description; it will be organised in separate 'categories', for example, the homepage will list the top 5 blog posts from various 'categories' of the site which include 'My Life', 'My Career', 'My Car', etc. Each of these categories will be its own section of the website however they are all in relation to me. I will also include my resume and will use it as a way of getting additional revenue not only from advertising, but from offering various services such as hosting and possibly making use of my architectural skills (I am currently in my third year of studying architecture).

I hope that you all understand what I am trying to release and kindly ask that you all provide me with as much feedback as possible. I know that most of you have MUCH more experience then I have and it's always been said that sharing is caring. Help me make this final project one to remember and exist for many years to come!

Thanks very much everyone and sorry about the essay!

~ Gary ;)

As long as its NOT... ANY type of portfolio site, and will NOT be given to anyone as any time of reference, and is NOT being used to drive business your way, Then I'm all for it

But if it is a portfolio or has a commercial reasoning behind it, i strongly suggest not mixing your life/work/car on the same page.

Just my opinion.

And the car guy in me has gotten the best of me, what kinda car you got?

It isn't a portfolio site in the way you know it, I am not the best graphic designer in the world. However I might be adding a little section showing my architectural drawings in order to draw some potential clients to use my services... Or do you mean a portfolio altogether? What do you mean 'not be given to anyone as any time of reference'? In regards to it being used to drive business my way, that is not intended at all. I am not using it to gain any sort of client base, however if someone did want to use my services it is an additional feature of the site and something I can offer to them.

I really do understand what you mean by not mixing the portfolio or commercial methods into personal life, work, car, etc, and is something which I want to avoid. It is basically an entire site with different 'categories' all about me. If someone wants to use my services or require advice, I will gladly offer it. I am not creating it in order to make millions of dollars or any money at all. Any donations or people paying for their services is extra and appreciated.

Regarding what car I have, my car is very similar to this car below (it is not my car, but I do not have pics of my car at the moment however I am selling them and will edit this post once the pics are taken so that these below aren't deceiving). The car is a 1987 Holden VL Executive (listed as links to prevent going off-topic too much):

So what do you think about the idea as a whole now that I've provided additional details? Do you think it will work and do you think I have the right mindset? Do you think I am going down the right path in regards to owning my own personal site and having the right content on it?

It's a real Australian car. If you're in Australia, you tend to see quite a bit of them however most are just stock and are driven by older people. Nice car you have also.

Everyone should be listening to SatanicPenguins; more opinions appreciated!
