you could add a 'selective color' layer
select the whites option and color (this is in cs4, but im sure its in 3 also)

Layer -> new adjustment layer -> selective color

there is also a replace colour option yea..

image -> adjustments -> replace color ;)

i never use that though since it will change the colours on your layer, while using an adjustment layer (like i mentioned before) will leave your layer alone (easier to undo if you decide you dont like it after a while)

not sure how it works, but you are best to play with the hue and saturation sliders instead of picking a color ;)

yeah its odd as when i select a colour and it changes although altering the hue and saturation i am only ever changing a shade of grey

ha just tested ths again and it seems that any colour can be replaced but when replacing a white it only does it with greys.

so i will find another way around, thanks for your help

I'm not on a comp with PS right now, but I believe there is a Select>Color Range option. So you could select whatever color you want to replace, delete it, and add a solid layer underneigth that is the replacement color of your choice.
