Out of focus text

I would like to be able to recreate this out of focus look on text. The attached example is of two different fonts that just look like this by default. I want to do the same type of effect to any other font.

I use Inkscape and GIMP.

that sir, would be E.Z.

you type your text. rasterize the text. make a selection of the text. go to the menu, click selection-modify-contract (i think thats the menu selection). then invert the selection by pressing ctrl+shift+i. press delete on your keyboard. and your done!

Is that for Inkscape or GIMP? I'm not seeing any of those commands in either...

ooh, sorry... i don't know how i missed that line of text in your post..
those were actually directions for photoshop

Ah, in that case, does anyone here know the equivalent GIMP commands?
