Hi Chewx,
What resolution did you design your site for? On my computer it just looks very small. You will need to make sure that it is clear what your sites aim is on the homepage, not make people squint and look for it.
My advice:
Bigger portfolio pictures instead of a big static picture on the left. Bigger text and make it clear what the website's aim is at the first glance.

Bigger text is undestandable.
Picture on the left is huge, i wouldn't want any bigger than that ?
The title clearly says the aim. Also in the graphic it clearly says its a portfolio website.

I agree with you that the pic on the left is big enough, I think there must be a resolution issue. Try changing your screen res, or if you want I can send you a screendump of what the site looks like on my monitor.

If it's a portfolio site, I'd say make the portfolio pieces the center of attention. Right now the side image is taking up the attention and the content of the page is too small and gets lost.
