I am colorizing a black and white photo of an African American and while I can handle the background and the clothing in the photo, I can't seem to find a good tutorial or instructions on how to colorize African-American skin tone. Can anyone offer me some help or a searching point to start?

Yah, here is a link to one that should work for what you need. Generally I would do a little more hands on work with coloring photos, but this will be an easy way to get the tones you are looking for (or for about any skin types). Just keep playing with it or trying different sample pictures and it should get you really close with little effort.
