Breaking down a house is fun! Smelly though...

The most recent project was the teardown of a DISGUSTING cold room, which has been taking in water and moisture for about 30 years now and was FULL of mold, rotten wood, water and all kinds of disgusting creepy-crawlies. A cold room by the way is typically a vented room that is built off the basement that is part of the concrete foundation, but not a finished room with insulation, drywall etc. People use the room to store food, wine etc. Anyhow, this one had been sort of finished but not done properly so it was full of water and was allowed to become a health hazard. Household mold is dangerous, so it had to be torn out ASAP, and had to be done with full respirators! The basement REEKED of rot or like a stagnant swamp while we tore it out. The room is quite small, but there was so much wood used in there we filled a 10 yard dumpster to top! (A 10 yard dumpster is 10' long, 8' wide and 4' deep).
Here's how the wall looked once we got a layer of pressboard, studs and foam off the wall... you can see the entire wall in the corner is dark from water and mildew, and check out the sludge oozing from the bottom corner of the window. The wood frame of the window was literally mud.
And here you can see all the crap on the floor that came just from that little section we tore out... We had to use the tablesaw to cut pieces down to box them up for the garbage as we didn't have the container yet out front to dump the crap in.
My brother Alain and I tore the room apart, my dad was back home in Ottawa and wasn't able to join in on the fun. He did however send us a text message on Alain's phone telling us to get off our asses and get to work. Here's what we send back:
And this gives you an idea of the sludge that was all over the floor from rotten wood, bugs and other nastiness...
It pretty much smelled like it looks lol! Once this was all done, the door to the room was shut, window left open a crack and 2 fans were left on to dry the walls, ceiling and floor. It's been a week and there's still some moisture on the floor, so it gives you an idea of how much water was in the walls.
And her I am with my sweetie after a long day of tearing out rotten building supplies.
This weekend my father was able to make it down to Montreal with Alain Friday night and they stayed the entire weekend and we got a TON accomplished. We tore out the entire ceiling in the basement to install a suspended ceiling system so I can have access to all my wiring and plumbing for when the fun starts upstairs and got most of the new ceiling installed. I'll be finishing up this week and then installing all the new pot lights and wiring, should look sexay! We also installed vinyl siding on the outer walls of the cold room to keep the water out, changed the 40 gallon hot water tank for a 60, repaired and braced the stairs and landing inside the front entrance (the stairs were about a quarter inch away from the walls and shook like crazy when you walked on them), fixed some old plumbing with new Pex gear instead of copper and finished off some smaller little items throughout the house. I'll post pictures of the new basement ceiling and lights once I finish it up. I am hoping that all the moisture will clear up in the cold room so I can finish the inside of it finally... I'm hoping to make a small room out of it that I can use for storage and such.
So that's what I've been up to guys, needless to say my back hurts lol! This week I will be clearing up hundreds of tutorials in the queue and getting back to business. If you are waiting on me for anything, please feel free to send me a reminder, I'm more than a little scatter brained.
Thanks guys!
Dan
PS. Did you see the new Iron Man 2 trailer that was recently released? OMFG that is awesome...

Looks like your having lotsa fun with reo's but screw playing around with mold lol, hope you at least got an inspection to make sure none is anywhere in the house or your foundations arn't rotting away.

No the foundation and stuff is fine... it's simply an issue with how they built that room and totally fukered it and it was allowed to sit like that for years.
I met Maibbeth at the gym quite awhile ago, we started dating in December. AMAZING girl, I'm blown away and quite frankly wondering why I wasted my time in the first place with someone so empty inside.
Hehe I'll take some new ones of Rosie for ya

You'll have to give us a video tour!
Me too, but mine is just a humble request. I am sure you are pretty busy now.
